MOUNT KIMBIE: uk duo with a penchant for field recordings. they make small scale dubstep that succeeds on a much larger scale, minimal, ambient dubstep textured with loops and samples. their debut album 'crooks & lovers' is up there with the best of 2010's releases. it is a seriously great album in every sense. if you dug gold panda's 'lucky shiner' then go out and get 'crooks & lovers' now. they're playing barsoma on the 11th of march with another favourite 'seekae'. ticket details soon.

IN SEARCH OF ELUSIVE LITTLE COMETS

i don't know if you saw it but i posted this vid on my facebook page in december. cause this song is wicked indie.

the boys from little comets have their debut album 'in Search of elusive Little Comets' coming out january 21st...but, if you go to their facebook page you can stream the album in it's entirety for free for two weeks before the release. 'her black eyes', 'mathilda' and 'tricolour' are my favourites right now but the whole album is definitely worth a listen. really dope indie-pop.

TOSKA

toska (russian)- vladmir nabokov describes it best: “no single word in english renders all the shades of toska. at its deepest and most painful, it is a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. at less morbid levels it is a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness, mental throes, yearning. in particular cases it may be the desire for somebody of something specific, nostalgia, love-sickness. at the lowest level it grades into ennui, boredom.”

i watched danny boyle's new film 127 hours on the weekend and danny is a genius and james franco delivers and 'festival' by sigur rós plays towards the end and it is perfect and those last six minutes of the movie are adrenaline and ecstasy and this song makes it work and it's from one of my favourite sigur rós albums 'með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust' and the album cover is fucking breathtaking and it was shot by ryan mcginley and he is incredible and you will see his pictures and you will love him too.

ORCA! STRAIGHT AHEAD!: sydney boys john and dane make epic experimental rock/electronic tunes.


they sound a bit like daft punk (particularly in 'work it out') in the vocals and that their music has that kind of dancy disposition. And a bit like cloud nothings in the sense that their songs have a definite pop sensibility to them despite the rawness and filtered vocal delivery. but essentially they are their own monster and they are definitely worth a listen. you can get their debut EP 'you can't say we didn't try' on itunes or at cdbaby.

in their words:

Orca! Straight Ahead! is what happens when you get two people who cannot sing, don't like anybody else enough to include them in the band, and don't think there is such a thing as a bad song.

THE FANTASIES

THE FANTASIES: from northampton. these tracks are huge, the drums via 1960's. got a wicked isley brothers erraticness to them. 'midnight boogie' and 'tick tock' are both available for free download as part of their 'meet the fantasies' EP on bandcamp.

also check out their 'how the fantasies stole christmas!' EP (also on bandcamp). its got more of an instrumental hip/hop feel to it, huge change of pace but again, great tracks.
